Waterproof Jackets and Its Benefits

Waterproof jackets are jackets which keep the water and moisture from seeping inside and help the wearer to be warm and dry when it is raining or snowing. What could be worse than getting drenched on your way to work because of unpredictable showers? The chances of falling ill are quite high in such a situation. To avoid the discomfort and to be warm during wet weather waterproof jackets come in the picture.

There are two types of waterproof jackets. One is where the fabric of the jacket is sprayed with material like polyurethane that repels water from the surface of the jacket. The second type of jacket has pores which are small on the outside of the jacket and keep water droplets and rain from seeping inside the jacket and has thicker pores on the inside which allows water vapour to escape.

The second type of jacket is more preferred because of its quality of being breathable. Waterproof jackets which are of the first type are not breathable. The person wearing such a jacket feels hot and sweaty as the jacket does not allow the sweat in the form of water vapour to escape from inside the jacket.
Waterproof jackets can be roughly categorised in three by their application.
There are waterproof jackets which are manufactured for regular use or for rambling. These are generally made of lightweight material and can be worn by the casual walker while going to work, walking for weight reduction, summer day time trips, general hiking, street walking etc.

The mid-weight waterproof jackets are made from material which is sophisticated to withstand more than an occasional shower. They are made for people who are into serious hiking and need jackets which can withstand heavy rain and snow. These jackets come with a hood and a lining to keep the wearer warm and comfortable. The tougher fabrics and technical design of the jackets is suitable for hill walking and trekking.

The heavy weight waterproof jackets are designed specifically for ice climbing, mountaineering and snow slopes. They protect the wearer from extreme weather conditions which is prevalent at high altitudes. These waterproof jackets are heavy and come with a hood. It has a lot of pockets which is suitable for mountaineering and also keeps the wearer warm.

The style and type of waterproof jacket to be worn will depend on the level of activity of the wearer. These jackets have many additional features such as number of pockets, hoods, type of zips, material, jacket length, seams and buttons which will also help the user to decide which waterproof jacket he needs to purchase for his level of activity.
